INDEX TAB

COLORS

"If the sections were any easier to find...

Color in index tabbing is an inexpensive way to distinguish the various sections of the manual or catalog.  In most cases, colored tabbing is more economical than multicolored printing or multicolored paper.

Color Attracts!  Color attracts and holds the attention of the index user better than black and white.

Color Signals!  The whole purpose of indexing is to make for "easy finding."  A colored tab, therefore, can become a "signal" to designate a given part of the catalog as much as the title on the tab.

Color Impresses! Index users will recognize functional colored tabbing as the sign of a carefully-planned presentation that deserves careful attention.

In planning color tabbing, remember to tie the color of the tab in with the section to which it applies.

For example:  A green tab would be appropriate for lawn supplies…and a red tab would be fitting for a catalog section on fire prevention equipment.

...they'd turn to themselves."

Single or Multiple Color Printing

  "Why use black ink…

The standard ink for tab titles is black, and this color is always used with colored film laminated tabs.  However, other colors may also be used effectively with clear film laminate or on uncoated tabs, and we can match most any color when a color sample is supplied.  Also, as indicated by the tab on this sheet, tabs may also be printed in reverse with the tab being the color you choose and the tab copy being reversed out.  If you prefer, we can select a color for you.

Where the extra cost is justified, photography, illustrations, text copy or company logos may be printed in one, two or four colors to add extra dimensions to index sheets.  For body printing, our composition department can create your layout and design.

Paper Stocks

"Let your ideas add the weight…

Before selecting your index paper stock, consider these variables:

  • Will the catalog be replaced frequently?
  • Will the catalog be used in presentations where a quality image is important?
  • Will printing appear on the sheet as well as the tab area?
  • Will white serve your purpose or do you want to make an impression with color stock?

A general rule about index paper weight is this:  if they get heavy use and you don't want film laminate reinforcing, you need a heavier stock.  Normally, a lighter weight stock is sufficient for reinforced indexes, which can be an economical alternative to costly heavyweight stock.  Also, if you intend to replace the indexes frequently, the stock can be even lighter, though we do not recommend this.

Rag content is not necessary because it does not add strength.  However, your choice of grain and color require careful consideration.  Grain running in the opposite direction of the tab length can wrinkle when the tabs are processed.  And color tabs printed on color paper are not as true as color printed on white.

...not your indexes."
